To Your Competition


Consider Acquiring A Website With
Your Strategic Search Term In The URL

All other ranking criteria being equal:
  • a website with the Strategic Search Term in the root URL (www.SearchTermHere.com), will out rank a site without it, and will outrank a webiste with it in the subdomain (SearchTermHere.example.com) or in the file file (www.example.com/SearchTermHere.html); 
  • a website with the Strategic Search Term in the subdomain (SearchTermHere.example.com), or in the file name extention  (www.example.com/SearchTermHere.html) will out rank similarly optimized sites without it;
  • and a website with part of the Strategic Search Term anywhere in the URL will outrank similarly optimized sites without it.

Whether or not acquiring an additional root URL with the Strategic Search Term in the root URL is advisable, depends on how much page rank and backlink authority your site already has vis-a-vis your competition.  If you already have significant backlinking to your site and can rank well without an aged, URL webiste closely related to your Strategic Search Terms, developing another may not be worth it.

CAVEAT:  One of Google's ranking algorithm changes in it's "caffiene" update of January, 2010 was penalizing newly registered URLs by limiting the page rank flow from backlinks to a new site, therefore limiting a new site's ability to rank high with moderately competative search terms.  A two year old site will not carry this burden.  Also, all new sites are manually reviewed by Google at about 30-60 days after index inclusion.   They commonly downgrade the ranking of a new site.  If you decide to get a new site, I recommend waiting 60 days before you start optimizing it to save your efforts from being downgraded in Google's new site review process.

However, where competition is very light a new site with a root domain with an exact phrase match will still out rank other sites with much superior ranking criteria.  If a Strategic Search Phrase has less than 100,000 sites competing for  that search term, and less than 50,000 with that search term in their Title Tag, a new, exact phrase url may compete very strongly with older sites with equal or even superior other ranking criteria.  That search term competition data is retrievable with options in Market Samurai free keyword section.

TIP:  My recommendation:  if you select a Strategic Search Term with in-page competition with less 100,000 sites, and in-Title competition with less than 50,000 sites, acquire an exact phrase match root url with any suffix available (.net | .org | .biz | .us, etc.) and create a another site without duplicate content to test its ranking inclinations.  If the Strategic Search Term doesn't justify this extra work, it probably wasn't a Strategic Search Term in the first place.

TIP:  If one or a few Strategic Search Terms dominate all the significant search volume in your business niche make the small invetment to acquire all the available exact match URL to sideline potential URL competition with your site.

Put Your Strategic Search Terms Prominently In All Important HTML Coding

HTML is the computer coding language used for websites.  I'm not going to give a HTML tutorial here, but following this section are link for how to do basic HTML SEO to acheive the following:  

Place your Strategic Search Term (in order of importance)
  • as the first phrase in the Title Tag
  • as the first phrase in the Descripton Tag
  • as the first phrase in the Keyord Tag (of importance to Yahoo index only)
  • in an H1 Tag, underlined, italizized and bolded (font can be reduced to very small size 1);
  • in H1 and H2 Tags elsewhere on the webpage
  • in an image Alt Tag
Make sure the density (the percentage occurance of the Strategic Search Term vis-a-via all other terms on a webpage) is between 3 and 5 percent.  Keyword density for any uploaded webpage can be checked here.

Latent Semantic Indexing

Google' ranking algorithm doesn't just look at the density of your Strategic Search Term, it looks for other terms it expects authoritative sites to have related to your Strategic search term.  This search engine measurement of other related terms is call latent semantic indexing (LSI).

There is a portal that will tell you what Google's own algorithm determines is the most relevant LSI terms to your strategic search term.  Do a Google search on your Strategic Search Term.  Click on the "Show options" text link as shown here (make sure "instant Google" is off (right of search button):

Take the LSI terms generated from Google's own algorithm and include them in the page you are ranking as text-anchored links. Text-anchored links are text highlighted in another color, usually blue, which links to other webpages. These LSI text-anchored links should link to the number one Google result is for that LSI result.  

Some reliable sources (like Market Samurai) recommend that LSI anchor-text links go to original content on another page of your website.  I personally find the ranking effectiveness of this extra work not worth effort. Suit yourself.

Only Combine Compatible Search Terms On One Webpage

For instance, assume research show that you will acquire a top position for the following three search terms in your business niche:

SR22 insurance
SR22 insurance quote
non owner SR22 insurance

You could combine the first two on one webpage eligantly in the Title and Description Tags, as well as in the body of the webpage as " SR22 Insurance quote", and give "non owner SR22 insurance its own webpage:  i.e., YourSite.com/non-owner-SR22-insurance.html.

Your backlink structure will have seperate anchor-text backlinks for "SR22 Insurance", "SR22 Insurance quotes", and "non owner SR22 insurance", pointing to their respective pages.

Necessary Website Depth

To be authoritative in Google's ranking algorithm, your site must have a minimum number of pages.  In addition to the page your are ranking, you should have the following pages linked to each other and from your home page:  
  • About Us
  • Privacy
  • Terms and Conditions
  • Contact
  • Blog
Google is not inclined to highly rank a one page wonder.  

Your site should also include multi-media.  Make and upload a video about your business.  Or, do a search on You-tube for videos related to your business and embed that.

With the highest website relevance possible, its time for STEP 5 - creating website authority.
